Ottawa Hunter Uses Cell Phone to Call for Help

Jim Suwal

If it hadn’t been for his cell phone, Jim Suwal may not be alive today.

Suwal had been hunting deer from a tree stand when he fell out of the tree into a swamp. When he regained consciousness almost five hours later, he was able to use his cell phone and call for help.

Police officials were able to use the GPS triangulation from Suwal’s phone to locate where he lay.

According to Fire Chief Paul VanEssen:

“There’s no doubt that we would not have found him and he would have died from hypothermia. By the time we found him he was incoherent and had no idea where he was.”
